The Sudanese Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Society (SHPBS) was formally recognized at the 17th World Congress of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA), held in Singapore from 28–31 October 2026 at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre.
In a ceremony held during the Congress, SHPBS received a commemorative plaque “in recognition of the achievements of The Sudanese Chapter.” The plaque was presented and signed by Professor René Adam (President, IHPBA), Professor K.K. Madhavan (President-elect, IHPBA), and Professor Eduard Jonas (President, E-AHPBA).

A Milestone for HPB Surgery in Sudan
This recognition marks an important milestone in the development of hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) care in Sudan. It affirms the growing role of Sudanese surgeons, hepatologists, oncologists, and allied specialists in the global HPB community, and acknowledges years of effort to build local capacity, train the next generation of HPB specialists, and improve outcomes for patients across the country.

Welcomed into the IHPBA International Community
The SHPBS delegation was warmly welcomed by the IHPBA international leadership, joining colleagues from Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East on the global HPB platform. The welcome reflects IHPBA’s commitment to inclusive, cross-regional collaboration and to supporting emerging chapters in building sustainable HPB services.

Sudanese Scientific Contributions
Beyond the recognition ceremony, Sudanese members contributed original scientific work to the Congress programme, including:
- “Missed Clues in Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding: A Case of Gastroduodenal Intussusception due to Gastric GIST Causing Biliary Obstruction” — a case-based poster highlighting diagnostic pitfalls and surgical management of a rare presentation of upper GI bleeding.
- “Pancreatic Cancer in Africa: Sparse Data, Late Presentation, and Uneven Treatment Outcomes Across the Continent” — a regional review on the burden of pancreatic cancer in Africa, calling attention to late presentation and the need for better data infrastructure and more equitable treatment pathways.

Looking Ahead
SHPBS extends sincere thanks to the IHPBA, E-AHPBA, the Congress organizers in Singapore, and every member of the Sudanese delegation who represented the Society. The Society will continue to build on this recognition through structured training programmes, multidisciplinary clinical collaboration, and research partnerships at national, regional, and international levels.
